After you my dear Alphonse by Shirley Jackson Essay Example For Students

After you my dear Alphonse by Shirley Jackson Essay In this short story Shirley Jackson depicts how destructive Racism can be, despite the fact that theres no savagery or murder included. In any case, it additionally shows how a white kid and a dark kid can have a relationship to one another without any partialities; they think about one another equivalent people. The game the young men are playing where they are stating after you my dear Alphonse to one another, is one of the manners in which Jackson discloses to us that they are equivalent. Mrs Wilson then again, doesn't consider Boyd as an equivalent individual to herself and her child. Mrs Wilson is attempting to conceal her Prejudices by being amiable and liberal to Boyd. She cannot quit posing inquiries to (About) Boyds foundation and his family. She expect that Boyds family are poor regardless of the way that she doesnt have any associate (knowledge)of Boyds foundation and his familys economic wellbeing. In any event, when her own child Johnny discloses to her that Boyds father is the foreman of the manufacturing plant; she disregards it and proceeds with her doubting of Boyd. She slanders Boyds family as poor since they are dark; witch (which) was typical as of now. Also, she considers her vision on Boyd, on the grounds that a great deal of individuals of color were poor during the 40s where (when) the story happens. At the point when the young men are served stewed tomatoes, Johnny answers to his mom that Boyd doesn't eat tomatoes, But Mrs Wilson answers back with extraordinary loftiness Boyd will eat anything to call attention to that Boyds family is poor. She feels that Boyd is thankful for anything he can get the opportunity to eat, yet when Boyd doesnt need to eat the tomatoes, Mrs Wilson understands that Boyds family may be similarly as fruitful as her own family seems to be. Her last attempt to prof that she is better than Boyd and his family. She offers Boyd recycled attire to (for) his family. Boyd discloses amenably to her that they have a lot of dresses themselves and that his family can get him anything he needs. Mrs Wilson lifted the plate of gingerbread off the table as Boyd was going to take another piece she blows up over the reality Boyd isn't appreciative for the garments she is offering him. She is imagining that she is accomplishing something acceptable. In any case, she out of nowhere understands that she cannot help Boyd, and afterward she need (needs) nothing to do with him, and she isn't as obliging and liberal as before Boyd educated her regarding his experience. Johnny doesnt share his moms sees. He is totally fair. He acts normally about Boyds nearness, similar to he would most likely do to his different companions; he has no partialities about individuals of color. Johnny is a genuine case of childrens guiltlessness. He doesnt comprehend his moms remarks and the bigotry that is taken cover behind them. He is pondering about his moms odd explanations. However, he cannot interface it to Boyd being dark. It is an ideal case of how kids have no preferences. The title of the content is utilized to help this. Its an image of Boyd and Johnnys incredible kinship. It gives us how unaffected the young men are by Mrs Wilsons bigot conduct. The expression After you my dear Alphonse is regularly utilized in a circumstance where two individuals are so considerate to one another that they cannot concur who will do it. It initially originates from a (French) funny cartoon where Alphonse and Gaston cannot (cant) concur who ought to go trough an entryway first, so they are stuck at the time. The young men state the expression when they enter the home, yet they rehash it when they are going out once more. This reveals to us that the young men are not influenced by Mrs Wilsons Biased assessments. The short story is written in 1949. I think Jacksons message with composing this story is to show that America doesn't satisfy a portion of the major rules that fabricate the country. .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c , .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .postImageUrl , .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .focused content zone { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c , .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:hover , .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:visited , .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:active { border:0!important; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; haziness: 1; change: darkness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:active , .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:hover { murkiness: 1; change: mistiness 250ms; webkit-change: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .focused content region { width: 100%; position: relative; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; text-design: underline; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-outskirt span: 3px; text-adjust: focus; text-enrichment: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107 578031f10c .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .udfb4b10f3fe7d98aa4e107578031f10c:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: When The Emperor Was Divine EssayStatements like all men are viewed as equivalent and each man has the privilege to seek after Happiness is addressed by Jackson in this Short story. Compare and Contrast Japanese and Western Imperialism in Asia and the Pacific 23 October 2013 at 18:10 The Japanese pursuit for an empire in South East Asia helped changed the balance of world power away from Europe, by taking their most lucrative colonies. Soon after the Japanese defeat in World War II, most of the colonies won their independence from their European masters. This essay will be arguing that despite the vast geographical distance and cultural, racial differences, as well as the different time periods involved, Japanese and European intentions were very similar, and that these similarities contributed to the weakening of Imperialism as a doctrine. To do so, this essay will be examining the reasons for the Japanese†¦show more content†¦The second problem was the Black Death, which was a bacteria that infected rats. As towns became over crowded and food became scarce, hundreds of millions of rats migrated to the towns. People lived with the rats in filthy conditions, allowing the fleas that became infected while infesting the rats to attack people and infect them too. Some historical sources claim up to 2/3 of Europe’s population were affected and half died. Lastly, European powers were constantly locked in power struggles such as the 100 Years War between England and France. Thousands were killed or crippled over sometimes only a few kilometres of territory. These problems all contributed to a chronic labour shortage. Landowners had too many crops and no-one to harvest them. Peasants and Serfs tried to take advantage of the situation by trying to implement new conditions, but landowners refused to lower quotas, even though there were fewer people to meet them. This led to revolt and some changes were put in place. Landowners started paying wages for the first time. The way Europe responded to this was by introducing mercantilism. Mercantilism is an economic doctrine where a country dedicates all its national resources (eg. Natural, labour, industrial etc) on a national level, unlike within feudalism where it was on a local level. A step towards mercantilism was the establishment of the absolute monarchies who took control of theirShow MoreRelatedOne Significant Change That Has Occurred in the World Between 1900 and 2005. 1927 - 1928 Academy Awards

1927 - 1928 Academy Awards The very first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. More of a fancy dinner than the huge, staged ceremony of today, it was the beginning of a grand tradition. The Very First Academy Awards Soon after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927, a committee of seven members was given the task of creating an Academy Awards presentation. Though the idea was shelved for nearly a year due to other pressing Academy issues, the plans for an awards ceremony presented by the Awards committee were accepted in May 1928. It was decided that all films released from August 1, 1927 through July 31, 1928 would be eligible for the first Academy Awards. The Winners Were Not a Surprise The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929. It was a quiet affair compared to the glamor and glitz that accompany the ceremonies of today. Since the winners were announced to the press on Monday, February 18, 1929 - three months early - the 250 people who attended the black-tie banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel werent anxious for the results to be announced. After a dinner of Filet of Sole Saute au Buerre and Half Broiled Chicken on Toast, Douglas Fairbanks, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, stood up and gave a speech. Then, with the help of William C. deMille, he called the winners up to the head table and handed them their awards. The First Statuettes The statuettes that were presented to the first Academy Awards winners were nearly identical to those handed out today. As such, they can specify the exact requirements of their order, i.e. the color, flavor, taste and type of the Pizzas they want through the online platform, just as simply as making an order at a brick and mortar restaurant. This web site enabled PizzaHut to transform significantly from operating as a Quick Serve Restaurant (QSR) to an elevated online retailer providing convenience and efficiency to its customers. Once the customers make an order through the PizzaHut.com website, the company takes upon the duty of delivering their orders at their preferred premises within the stipulated times (Butler, 2012). Several elements of website design exist that a company should incorporate in order to make its website a success. As such, PizzaHut.com also had to engage these in developing its site. These include the website context, the website content, the website customization, the website communications, the website commerce, website communities on site, and the website connection designs elements. PizzaHut.com incorporates all these elements in a great deal. For instance, the website context provides its customers with the ability to make online purchases and order without necessarily having to go to the restaurants. The website content is rich enough to enable the customers make an informed purchase, i.e. includes offers of the day, special deals and promotional campaigns hosted by the company. Play and Work - Essay Example Really, the working process usually brings much pleasure. As for me, I work to realize my abilities, feel myself significant, not to lose time. The given paper will prove that even the richest people can’t do without everyday work. How do we benefit from work? First of all, work teaches people how to be responsible. This explains why children from comfortable families are eager to work. They want to hold the responsibility for their future and do not want to account only on their parents. The sense of responsibility helps us build a happy family. A person who is not responsible for his/her own life will not be able to become responsible for the family, thus his/her family will not be strong and happy. Moreover, the sense of responsibility of the countries’ citizens is the guarantee of state’s thriving and prosperity. The word â€Å"work† is the antonym to the word â€Å"idleness†, and we know what consequences idleness may have. Even if a person has money and may not work for it, he/she still should take effort to make the money work for him/her. This is also a work that will not allow this person to appear without a penny one day. When a person is doing nothing, it leads to wastefulness and wastefulness in its turn leads to poverty. There are many examples that testify that idleness is destructive. Any amount of money can be easily spent during a short period of time. Thus, even the richest people prefer to work rather than doing nothing. Furthermore, many rich ones know pretty well that it is not very easy to become rich, thus they do their best to save their money and the only way to save it is to continue working. The work helps us be healthy and in a good shape. When we do not work, we are degrading and our personality is not developing. We need constant practice in order to keep the knowledge we once gained. That is why old people prefer to work even after retirement. They do not want to lose the skills and knowledge. Ol d people also state that working after retirement help them feel young and healthy. Every work is beneficial. Unfortunately, in our society people prefer to respect only intellectual work. It is valued high and, thus, brings more money. Certainly, intellectual work demands getting an appropriate education, therefore many people do their best and sacrifice much in order to receive a good education. However, I consider manual work to be not less important. In the article "brains as well as brawn" Mike Rose talks about the injustice that presents in our society. The author shares the feelings he had watching a carpenter working: â€Å"I am watching a carpenter install a set of sliding French doors in a tight wall space. He stands back, surveying the frame, imagining the pieces as he will assemble them. What angle is required to create a threshold that will shed water? Where might the sliding panels catch or snag? How must the casings be remade to match the woodwork in the rest of the room? And how can he put it all together fast enough and smart enough to make his labor pay?† (Rose 337). Here we can see that the work of carpenter is really difficult and unique, it demands much efforts. Unfortunately, nobody thinks about it and nobody notices his work. In our modern world everybody wants to become an economist, a manager, a translator, but there are few people who value manual work. We prefer to value the work of accountant or a doctor, but never notice the work of, for example, a waitress and the number of tasks she has to implement:

Themes in Call of the Wild The movie consists of an evident theme an outreach for oneness.

Existentialism In No Exit Essay -- essays research papers

In his play, No Exit, Jean-Paul Sartre examines basic themes of existentialism through three characters. The first subject, Garcin, embraces existentialist ideas somewhat. The second character, Inez, seems to fully understand ideas deemed existential. Estelle is the third person, and does not seem to understand these ideas well, nor does she accept them when they are first presented to her. One similarity amongst the three is that they all at some point seem to accept that they are in Hell for a reason.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Garcin admittedly is in Hell because he was unkind and unfaithful to his wife. He however, does not wish he had acted differently, for he says, “I tell you I regret nothing (p. 24).'; In this respect of acknowledging and owning up to his actions, Garcin is following existentialist laws. However, he sometimes violates them. For example, he is so preoccupied with the idea that he is a coward that he demands the women to renounce this and declare his masculinity. He is so dependent upon this that he refuses to engage in sexual activity with Estelle until she affirms him. This is anti-existential because according to its principles, he should not have to rely on others for confidence.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Inez is in Hell because she had seduced her cousin’s wife, then conspired to make his life miserable, until he finally stepped in front of a tram and was killed. Inez also brought a lot of guilt upon her lover, Floren...

Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is when a person is forced or under strong influence from their friends to do something be it good or bad. Peer pressure can have both positive and negative effects. Hence this essay will discuss about the positive and negative effect of peer pressure. Firstly, a little peer pressure can be a tool to motivate students to achieving great heights. For instance, when a weak student is struggling with his studies, his classmates can help by encouraging him in every little improvement he makes. This will not only make the weak student feel motivated to study, but also to improve his friendship with his friends. Secondly, with peer pressure, students can help their friends who are addicted to smoking. They can constantly remind, nag and scold the classmate who is smoking to not smoke. This will pressure the student who is smoking to quit his bad habit as all his friends are against it. This is another positive effect of peer pressure. Lastly, peer pressure can help in situations when 2 students are fighting. Students can use peer pressure to strongly discourage the two parties from fighting and instead, help to mediate and let them talk things out. Thus resolving all conflicts. However, There are negative effects to peer pressure too Firstly, there are numerous students who smoke in schools. These students may go around forcing their wills onto other innocent students to smoke. Because they are in groups and are intimidating the innocent students maybe forced into smoking. There is a high chance that they will pick up the bad habit too. Secondly, peer pressure can cause students to be depressed. For instance, when a student is being picked on in class by a group of ‘popular’ students. He might feel that he is unwanted and that the class hates him. Sooner or later, he will be depressed and hate coming to school. This is damaging to the student’s mental health as he is constantly afraid of people attacking him verbally or even physically. To sum up, there are many effects of peer pressure, both positive and negative effects. Peer pressure can be used to motivate, inspire and build up relationship with one another. However, they can also be destructive as they can corrupt and destroy people’s lives. ï » ¿Peer Pressure Have you ever been forced to do anything ? Have u ever felt that you are in a tight corner because of someone's comment? We all could face situations like that; we all could have faced peer pressure. What is peer pressure? â€Å"Peer pressure is when someone or a group of people influences or encourages others to do things they do not want to do or tries to change people’s attitude, or behavior towards something or it is the feeling that someone of your own age is pushing you towards making a certain choice, good or bad†( http://www.thecoolspot.gov/pressures.asp). Peer pressure is mostly common among teens, they could accept to do something they don't want to do as their friends would make fun of them or everyone is just trying to fit in.Because when you act in a different way you are considered an outsider and not cool. The desire to fit in can go as far as doing things you have never imagined. We all are influenced by our peers, both negatively and positively. It help s us to define who we are. It is how we chose to react to peer pressure that defines who we are as individuals. Are we a leader or a follower? Both types of people are needed to make the world go round or just you may lose yourself and forget who you are just to satisfy your peers. Peers influence your life, even if you do not realize it, just by spending time with you.You learn from them, and they learn from you. It is only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group. Peers can have a positive influence on each other. For example, a student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember something related to the subject. You might admire a friend who is always a good support for you and try to be like him, these are examples of how peers positively influence each other every day.Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, some people in school might try to get you to cut class with them, or your friend might try to convin ce you to try to start smoking or taking drugs with him, or your friend in might want you to shoplift with  him. The causes of peer pressure are so many, One of the main reasons that can lead to peer pressure is lack of self-confidence, the feeling of being alone, not accepted by anyone or by society, everyone is making fun of you and the desire to fit in, these reasons can affect anyone easily and put him under this pressure. One of the causes also is changing the environment you are used to, like leaving high school and going to University, meeting new people with different characters and personalities. Or the big problem might be in the way parents bring up their children. This can affect society in good and bad ways. The effects of negative pressure can lead to the presence of cloning minds different people but have the same mentality, thinking in the same way and acting in an inappropriate way that is unacceptable by the society. A question that always comes up.Why do people g ive in to peer pressure? People give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, may be Others go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that everybody is doing that thing can influence some people to leave their common sense behind and the way they judge things. How can people combat peer pressure? The normal way of just saying no does not work. Sure, it sounds good to say no but in reality, a person may want to say no, but just cannot as it is tough to be the only one who is facing this pressure, but on the other hand you can pay attention to your feelings and beliefs about the right and wrong things that can help you more self-confidence and having a strong pack up from parents, family even from your teachers can help you stand firm. One of the solutions that help you to run away from peer pressure is to have at least one friend, who is willing to say no too. This takes a lot of the power out of this pressure and makes it much ea sier to resist. Try to ask for advise from your teacher or your family and they will support you facing peer pressure, stay away from friends who use drugs, smoke cigarettes, or even lying. Also try to help a friend who is facing peer pressure or having troubles resisting it, it can be so powerful to one of them by joining the other in order not to  feel alone in this nightmare. To sum up peer pressure is like a nightmare chasing us all, so If you continued to face peer pressure and you are finding it difficult to handle, talk to someone you can trust and don't feel guilty if you have made mistakes. Stand up again and continue your way and prepare youself for the next time you face peer pressure.

The Transformation of Europe Essay - 1252 Words

Over two-hundred years ago, Europe was a vastly different place. To the modern eye, the Europe of the 18th Century would be unrecognizable compared to its current state. However, the road to this new Europe has been not been all kicks and giggles, but a rather rough and tumble journey. Due to the introduction of new ways of thinking, the occurrences of multiple revolutions, changes in government style and leadership, which led to the creation and extinction of numerous countries as well as rearrangement of boundary lines, and the formation of a European Union, Europe today is hardly comparable to the Europe in our history books. The transformation that Europe experienced spanned a period of more than two-hundred years and made it into the†¦show more content†¦All three of these rights were privileges that the upper-class and monarchies stripped from the lower-classes. Other outspoken individuals like Olympe de Gouges, Voltaire, and Pierre Beaumarchais used their individual writings as an outlet to express their criticism of the privileged and high society that held the power in France. De Gouges spoke for the women of the time and fought for their rights and privileges in â€Å"The Declaration of the Rights of Woman.† De Gouges, who wrote of many radical ideas in this piece, implied that men and women’s right should be equal and even drew up her own social contract for marriage. Voltaire’s Candide consisted of harsh critiques of the state, religion, human nature, and even the Enlightenment of which Voltaire was an advocate; Voltaire himself received large amounts of condemnation for his work and Candide was widely banned. Beaumarchais harshly criticized the French monarchy (disguised as a Spanish monarchy), inherited privilege, the institution of marriage, and the roles of men and women. Beaumarchais himself was a big advocate for reform, but not necessarily revolution. However, the idea of Enlightenment, which was heavily represented in these pieces, may have been the fuel that sparked Europe’s fire for change and revolution. Enlightenment brought about the ideas of change: a change in the use of knowledge but also a change in power. Racism and Different Background Ethnicity in Disneys Movies - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1081 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2019/02/05 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Racism Essay Did you like this example? Introduction Walt Disney is one of the biggest entertainment companies to exist with an annual revenue of $59.43 billion (Statista). Yet, some would find it a bit shocking that racism and stereotypes would exist in their films. Because in most homes Disney’s movies are a beloved collection. Though, a lot has changed since the early 1920s when Disney was first founded (Farland, David). But, the question still remains today, do racism and ethnicity exist or play a role in Walt Disney’s animation? Many have argued and believed that most of Disney’s cartoon animation and films have portrayed ethnicity and racial bias along with stereotypical gender roles (Underlying Racism in Disney). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Racism and Different Background Ethnicity in Disneys Movies" essay for you Create order The Princess and The Frog Compared to Disney’s early animated films, that openly showed racism like Dumbo and Fantasia, Disney has made some progress in improving diversity and depicting ethnic heroes and heroines like Aladdin (1992), Pocahontas (1995), Mulan (1998) and etc (Nunez, Veronica). However, these films contain racist connotations and a distorted portrayal of other cultures (POC, Nerdy). Though she is not heroic and before the film was released, Disney’s first African-American princess Tiana â€Å"The Princess and the Frog† was already undergoing scrutiny for its stereotypical portrayal of African Americans (Barnes, Brooks). Like Disney’s original classic princesses like Snow White and Cinderella, Tiana was hand-drawn, wore a tiara, had an upsweep hairdo, was a songbird, strong-willed and found her prince charming though all odds. Yet, some critics question: Was the film based in New Orleans in the 1920s to degrade African American stereotypes or uplift them? While others were offended by the film’s storyline being based in New Orleans, due to the devastating tragedies of the to the community. Another issue critics had with the film was Prince Naveen and how he was voiced by a Brazilian actor â€Å"Bruno Campos†(Barnes, Brooks). Though in Disney’s offense he is not white. Others believed Disney studio doesn’t think a black man is worthy of the title prince. The characters hair and features described as non-black did not make it better for their defense. At the end of the day, some critics wanted a black prince. Along with Ray the firefly voiced by â€Å"Jim Cumming† some people believe his voice was too much like an uneducated southern African American (Barnes, Brooks). A rumor surfaced about an early script of the film and the Disney’s princess early name and her role in the film. Her original name would have been Madeleine. Maddy for short, but some believed the name was too close to the racist name Mammy (Barnes, Brooks). Maddy’s role in the film would have been a chambermaid for a Caucasian woman, a historical profession for an African American during the 1920s. To a lot of people, the character reminded them too much of slavery and the idea was quickly ignored. But, while others bashed Disney for sticking to stereotypes, others saw differently and applauded Disney for trying to be diverse and add diversity. A web designer from Los Angeles stated â€Å"Who knows if Disney will get it right,† she added. â€Å"They haven’t always in the past, but the idea that Disney is not bending over backward to be sensitive is laughable. It wants to sell a whole lot of Tiana dolls and some Tiana paper plates and make people line up to see Tiana at Disney World.† While members of the N.A.A.C.P. gave extremely positive feedback about the film (Barnes, Brooks). Other Walt Disney’s Animation Though a lot has changed and evolved since the early Disney, people today can’t believe that such an aspiring, positive and innocent media could still have some racist undertone in its animation (Underlying Racism in Disney). Early films like Dumbo that had a crow named Jim Crow and portrayed the crows as pimped hat wearing uneducated speaking crows (YouTube). The Jungle book: All of the animals in the film had proper accents yet, King Louie and the monkeys all spoke jive and wanted to become â€Å"real people†(POC, Nerdy). Directors of the film wanted Louie Armstrong to be the voice of King Louie but did not want to offend the N.A.A.C.P. by voicing a black man the character of a monkey (YouTube). Though judgment is not being passed on the people that we behind the scenes during this time because, certain films where a product of their time and normal to their society. However, films like Aladdin is no excuse. In 1993, The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee was not thrilled with the Aladdin soundtrack and complained to the company for a lyrics change (Barnes, Brooks). (â€Å"Where they cut off your ear/If they don’t like your face/It’s barbaric, but, hey, it’s home†). The committee saw this as disparaging towards the Arab people. Disney did comprise part of the lyrics and released an updated version of the lyrics on VHS (YouTube). Conclusion In conclusion, I am still a very huge Walt Disney fan. But, I feel as though a bit more consideration can go into the idea and production of Disney’s films and animations that are based on people ethnicity, culture, and race so that people are not offended. Disney’s executives feel as though people should stop jumping to race and conclusions about their films when critics feel as though they are trying to be sneaky about including stereotypes or trying to be offensive about their films (Barnes, Brooks). It’s not their intentions. A producer at Disney also stated â€Å"We feel a great responsibility to get this right. Every artistic decision is being carefully thought out† (Barnes, Brooks). While cast members have defended the company as well. Anika Noni Rose voice of Tiana (The Princess and The Frog) stated â€Å"There is no reason to get up in arms,† she told reporters at a Los Angeles Urban League dinner. â€Å"If there was something that I thought was disrespectful to me or to my heritage, I would certainly not be a part of it† (Barnes, Brooks). In the end and until the end of time, people are going to have their own personal opinions about Walt Disney’s films and if they portray racism and stereotypes of people from different background. Who is to say that they are right or wrong? Because, in the end, everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion and feelings and at the end of the day, you can’t please everyone.

Is Technology Making Us Stupider Free Essays

Nicholas Carr starts his essay with the observation that his win book reading and long article writing habits have suffered immensely due to lack of concentration which can be attributed to the time being spent on the internet. He goes on to say that the human beings are developing a new reading habit which he doesn’t think is best suited given that there is much less concentration and even lesser contemplation. While commenting on how the future researcher will not do a lot of reading, Carr paints a sad picture of the new generation of readers. We will write a custom essay sample on Is Technology Making Us Stupider or any similar topic only for you Order Now While accepting that his work has o backing from neurology and other brain related science, Carr presents a theory that unlike the ability to speak, which he says comes naturally, the ability to read has to be taught. Here in he says the internet is doing no good to that particular ability. Carr makes a reference to the great German philosopher Nietzsche and his use of the typewriter. He quips about how the typewriter had made the philosopher’s work even more abrupt. Carr then reaches the central topic of his essay – the effect of internet on the cognitive ability of man. He says that man had a series of intellectual tasks in his daily routine all of which have now been taken over by the internet He further adds that the style of the internet has been adopted by other media as well, further denting man’s cognitive ability. Another key aspect of the internet that Carr says has dumber down the human brain is the conversion of an abstract concept to a concrete knowledge. This he says was previously done by the human being as an intellectual exercise but has now been taken over by the computers. Carr ends his essay on the note that in the past some great hinders such as Socrates and Sacrificing have expressed similar concerns about new ideas such as the written language and printed working. On this note, he leaves the question open to the reader (Carr). Steven Johnson bases his book on denying the argument that pop culture has affected human intelligence negatively. He first refers to the sleeper curve to make a point that even the society that existed before us had not discovered how cream pies could be a nutritious diet. However here he denies that just the fact about sleeper curve, which itself he draws from the movie Sleeper, can exhaustively prove his argument. He then goes on to suggest that the video games of today, contrary to popular perceptions Of spreading addiction through violent and vulgar content, are instead addictive because of their structural superiority. He says the games give the mind a lot to think and organize – a task previously not natural to the human cognitive process. He further speaks about television and says that the TV has taken the understanding of the emotional quotient to a higher level. He gives the example of reality shows and says that these shows have got a realistic understanding of the complex human engagements and relationships. While speaking about the evolution of films, Johnson says that stories are no more being spoon-fed to the audience. Symbolic references made to help the audience understand moments like flash-back have reduced and it is now assumed that the audience will understand what is going on. This he says has helped the people explore and express their cognitive self – much more than in the past (Johnson). Studies have found that the human brain’s evolution ceased over a thousand years ago (Connors). The technological advances that have been made in recent history have only served to compensate in the declining intellect of the human mind. While people who live between 2000 to 6000 years ago had to depend greatly on their mental strength to solve problems, the current availability of technology and inventions eliminates this need greatly. However, â€Å"the decline in intellect itself is not associated with the advent of technology but to deterioration in human genes† (Connors). Neither of the two theorists – Carr and Johnson have made scientific claims in their arguments. These arguments however are presented in a logical format with each claim being justified by significant arguments. Critics have remained vastly dismissive of both the arguments, calling the latter – an absolution for couch potatoes and the former a little too mournful too early. It is therefore clear that a real understanding of the effect of internet on the human mind can only be justified through neurological correlations and studies. However, human intellect has witnesses a decline for several thousands of years and hence it cannot be solely attributed to technology. How to cite Is Technology Making Us Stupider, Essays

5 Slang Words That May Never Be Legit

5 Slang Words That May Never Be Legit 5 Slang Words That May Never Be Legit 5 Slang Words That May Never Be Legit By Mark Nichol OK, like, OMG, I’m totally not bagging on you for tweeting or FBing or blogging these words, but they are so bogus in formal writing. LOL 1. Amirite This trendy favorite of commenters on pop-culture Web sites, meant to suggest a glibly tossed â€Å"Am I right?† I figured that out after initially wondering what the heck uh-mere-uh-tee meant has about as much chance of making it into the dictionary as fuhgeddaboudit. Save it for the fanboys you can do better than that. 2. Craptastic/craptacular These mash-ups of, respectively, crap and fantastic and crap and spectacular first cropped up in snarky online lambasting of overhyped pop-culture phenomena in the 1990s. I chuckled the first couple of times I came across them, but though they are ideal terms for assuming a sarcastic tone, they are best used in moderation and are not, and perhaps will never become, mainstream expressions of derision. Safer alternatives for general publication include absurd, laughable, ludicrous, preposterous, ridiculous, and risible. 3. Genius Out of seemingly nowhere, online correspondents began to use this as a short form of ingenious, as in â€Å"That’s such a genius move.† It has not acquired legitimacy, and in other than jocular usage, you don’t have to be a genius to avoid it. 4. Ginormous This collision of gigantic and enormous, dating from the 1990s, is a vivid term, but it is superfluous, considering that humongous, which also seemed to appear spontaneously in casual usage when it came on the scene in the 1960s, has already acquired a respectability the newer term as yet lacks. Plenty of words meaning â€Å"extremely large† exist: colossal, gargantuan, gigantic, immense, mammoth, massive, monstrous, prodigious, titanic, and vast, for starters. None of them has the neologistic cachet of ginormous, but the latter is for now only suitable in informal writing. 5. A Slang Word That Isn’t The adjective cliche, used in place of cliched, as in â€Å"That’s so cliche,† was originally on this list, until I looked it up and discovered, to my surprise, that it is a legitimate variant. Its sudden recent vogue lured me into thinking it was being misused in an affected manner much like the adjective genius (see above) is. It’s correct, but you’re welcome to use one of many synonyms, like hackneyed or trite. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
